Though orders to wear masks have proven to be controversial during the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Surgeon General tweeted his reasoning for how they promote freedom over the weekend.

Sunday morning, Dr. Jerome Adams tweeted that if more people wear masks, there will be more freedom to go out due to the lessening of the asymptomatic spread of COVID-19. This will, in turn, result in more places opening sooner, he said.

In a follow-up tweet, he acknowledged that there are strong feelings all around, but that he hoped people were making their decisions by listening to the best available information, rooted in science.

Adams is the 20th U.S. Surgeon General or “Nation’s Doctor” through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

He has been using his Twitter to promote awareness about COVID-19 and ways to be safe during the pandemic.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf has promoted wearing masks during the pandemic, and as many businesses around the state begin reopening, people are being required to wear masks inside businesses.
